Chilas: Several livestock were killed after a glacier burst and large rocks fell in Buner Nullah in Chilas district, according to police.
Police said that a glacier burst occurred in Buner Nullah, triggering a flood surge that swept away livestock enclosures. Several animals were killed in the incident. Large boulders continued to fall along with the floodwaters.
Farmers’ agricultural land and standing crops were buried under snow and destroyed in the incident. However, no loss of life was reported.
Residents affected by the incident in Buner Nullah have appealed to the administration for immediate assistance and effective preventive measures.
In recent years, Gilgit-Baltistan has witnessed an unusual increase in glacier-related incidents, which are being linked to climate change. The growing frequency of such events has raised concerns among local communities.
Deputy Director of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Muhammad Haroon, said the entire Gilgit-Baltistan region is being affected by climate change.
He said temperatures are rising every year, while the continuous growth in population and increasing pollution are also major challenges contributing to the rise in temperatures.
