The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a nationwide advisory urging mobile subscribers to ensure their Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) remain valid and active, warning that SIM services could be suspended for those with cancelled, expired, or deceased-linked CNICs.
In a notice addressed to all mobile users across the country, the PTA said uninterrupted mobile service depends on the continued validity of the CNIC linked to each SIM registration.
According to the authority, mobile services may be blocked under any of the following circumstances:
- The CNIC linked to an active SIM has been cancelled by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA)
- The CNIC has expired and not been renewed
- The SIM is registered in the name of a person who has since passed away
The PTA advised subscribers with expired CNICs to renew them through NADRA without delay to avoid disruption to their mobile connectivity.
Warning on AI-Generated Deepfakes
In a separate part of the advisory, the PTA cautioned the public against taking images and videos circulating on social media at face value, noting that AI-generated deepfake content can closely mimic reality while being entirely fabricated.
The authority said manipulated or fake content poses risks beyond reputational damage, warning that it can also create misunderstandings within families and personal relationships, and erode public trust more broadly.
The PTA urged citizens to verify any unusual or suspicious video, image, or news item through credible sources before sharing it, describing this as a key step in curbing the spread of misinformation online.
“Think First, Then Share”
The authority emphasized that adopting a “Think First, Then Share” approach should be treated as a core principle of responsible digital conduct in today’s online environment.
The advisory comes as telecom companies have also raised prices on mobile call and data packages, adding another point of concern for subscribers already navigating the CNIC compliance requirement.
