PML-N’s Abdul Jahan Wins GBA-15 in Razor-Thin Victory; Former Speaker Nazir Ahmed Loses Seat

GHIZER: PML-N’s Abdul Jahan has won the GBA-15 constituency in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections by a narrow margin, securing 7,153 votes according to the official Form-47 released by the Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan.

PPP’s Nazir Ahmed Advocate finished a close second with 7,034 votes — just 119 votes behind the winner — while independent candidate Safdar Ali Sherazi came third with 5,144 votes. A total of 17 candidates contested the seat, including 8 independents. Of 52,733 registered voters, 30,172 cast their ballots, reflecting a voter turnout of 57.2 percent.

The result delivers a significant political blow to Nazir Ahmed Advocate, one of the most prominent figures in the constituency’s recent political history. He had won this seat in the 2020 Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections and subsequently served as Deputy Speaker of the GB Legislative Assembly under Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid’s PTI-backed government.

Following the disqualification of Khalid Khurshid and the fall of the PTI provincial cabinet, Nazir Ahmed parted ways with PTI and aligned himself with the Gulbar Khan administration. His political fortunes rose further as he was elevated to the position of Speaker of the GB Legislative Assembly for the remainder of the assembly’s term — the highest legislative office in the province.

However, just ahead of the 2026 general elections, Nazir Ahmed joined PPP and contested on the party’s ticket, hoping his stature and experience would secure him another term. Despite his considerable profile, the razor-thin defeat suggests voters in GBA-15 opted for change, handing PML-N a hard-fought victory in one of the most closely contested seats of this election cycle.
