His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan V, arrived in Calgary, Alberta, for the second leg of his visit to Canada, marking his first official visit to Western Canada. He was accompanied by sons, Prince Irfan and Prince Sinan and welcomed at the airport by government representatives and Jamati leadership. Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas presented the Aga Khan and the two princes with the city’s iconic white hats during a welcome ceremony.
More than 20,000 people are expected to attend private gatherings with the Aga Khan in Calgary, organizers said in a news release, describing the visit as a reflection of the long-standing partnership between Canada and the Ismaili Imamat and a shared commitment to a more prosperous, just, and inclusive world.
Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini became the 50th hereditary imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims following the death of his father, Prince Karim Aga Khan, on February 4, 2025.
The visit includes meetings with government officials, community milestones, and private gatherings where members of the Ismaili Jamat will have the opportunity to be in the presence of their Imam and receive guidance on matters of faith and daily life.
Following Calgary, the Aga Khan will travel to Vancouver, where a housing-related agreement with the federal government is expected to be signed, alongside further engagement tied to the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development. MP Taleeb Noormohamed noted the visit holds deep spiritual significance, as many community members will be meeting the new Imam for the first time.
According to the Ismaili Council of Canada, the Aga Khan remains especially committed to the Aga Khan Development Network’s work on environmental protection and climate change mitigation.
