Islamabad/Gilgit-Baltistan — A rescue team resumed its search operation on Tuesday morning (August 25) to recover the body of Pakistani mountaineer Dr. Asma Mushtaq, who died on Spantik Peak in Gilgit-Baltistan, after a temporary improvement in weather conditions allowed the effort to continue.
Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar confirmed the development in a post on X, stating that the rescue team had once again set out from the base camp and was advancing toward Camp Two on the 7,027-meter peak. “The team is proceeding with extreme caution and will continue the search operation as long as weather conditions remain favorable,” Tarar said.
Dr. Asma Mushtaq died on August 20 while descending from Spantik at an altitude of approximately 6,400 meters, according to Alpine Club of Pakistan President Major General (retd.) Irfan Arshad. Her death was attributed to a high-altitude medical emergency.
Officials and rescue agencies said the recovery operation has faced repeated disruptions due to adverse weather in the region. The Alpine Club of Pakistan noted that the Pakistan Army had approved the rescue mission on humanitarian grounds, but cautioned that its ultimate success remains contingent on weather conditions holding steady at the higher camps.
The operation remains ongoing, with rescue teams continuing to push toward the site where Dr. Mushtaq’s body is believed to be located.
