Nepali mountaineering group says recovering Nawang Thendu Sherpa’s body from above 6,000m on Broad Peak is now unlikely this season.

Hopes of recovering the body of Nawang Thendu Sherpa, the last missing Nepali climber from the Broad Peak avalanche tragedy, are fading as the current climbing season draws to a close.

A Nepali mountaineering group, citing confirmation from officials, said on social media that the chances of retrieving Nawang’s remains this season are now considered low.

According to the post, high-altitude rescuer Dawa Sherpa, known as Speed Dawa, explained that Nawang’s remains lie above 6,000 meters in extremely difficult terrain. He said ground teams do not have sufficient rope to reach the location, and continuing avalanche risks make any immediate recovery attempt too dangerous for rescuers.

Nawang Thendu Sherpa was among ten climbers who went missing after an avalanche struck Broad Peak on July 30. The group included six Nepali climbers — world-renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja, popularly known as Nimsdai, along with Yukta Gurung, Nima Sherpa, Gyalu Sherpa, Nawang Thendu Sherpa, and Kili Pemba Sherpa.

The remaining climbers were American climber Sarah Mallory Gass, Omani climber Nadhira Al-Harthy, Chinese climber Wang Zhong, and renowned mountaineer Sohail Sakhi from Gilgit-Baltistan.

Through official rescue operations and self-help efforts by local rescuers, the bodies of nine of the ten missing climbers have been recovered so far. Nwang’s body remains the only one yet to be found.
