A spillway has formed in the dam created by the devastating flood in Raushen late last night, and the water has begun to flow.
The destructive flood was triggered by the bursting of a glacial lake above Talidas near Roshan last night, which completely flattened Talidas village and buried hundreds of houses under the floodwaters. The flood had blocked the Ghizer River, creating a dam-like situation upstream, submerging hundreds of houses and putting thousands more at risk.

With the river flow stopped, downstream areas were under severe threat, as the dam’s collapse could have unleashed a catastrophic flood, wiping out several villages.
After at least ten hours of blockage, the river carved its way through the flood debris, temporarily easing the fears of the locals. However, concerns still remain that if the spillway expands rapidly, it could trigger a stronger flow, cause erosion downstream, and submerge many more villages.

In view of the situation, residents living near the river have already been relocated to safer places.
